WE BEGAN A JUNIOR GOLF

PROGRAM

in our very small

rural school district here in Yuma

County, SomertonArizona in 1998.

The program outline called for the

class to be offered one day a week

for 4th and 5th grade students,

who were allowed to choose that

activity versus other activities such

as art and computer science.

Together, with the Physical

Education Director, we created a

curriculum based on teaching Golf

skills and their relationships to Life

skills.

We identified Core Skills to align

with 18 holes in a round of golf.

Golf teaches values, principles,

respect and integrity. It also

demonstrates that achievement

is the result for doing what is

expected every time and that life

requires the same attention to

detail and principles.

Golf is FUN and it is a sport for life,

because it teaches the True Values

of Life in a very positive way!

Maybe if golf were an option in

more schools across the country

and these basic life skills were

taught in conjunction with the

curriculum, we would see less of

the atrocious acts that headline the

news every day.

Integrity:

To act according to a

sense of what is right or wrong.

Initiative:

To do something, of one’s

own free will, because it needs to be

done.

Flexibility:

To be willing to alter

plans when necessary.

Perseverance:

To keep at it, no

matter what the obstacles.

Organization:

To plan, arrange

and implement in an orderly fashion for

use when needed.

Sense of Humor:

To laugh and

be playful, without hurting others.

Honesty:

To be honest and tell the

truth no matter the consequences.

Effort:

To do your best, what comes

from effort is based only on what effort

you put in.

Common Sense:

To use good

judgment and make good common

sense decisions.

Problem Solving:

To create

positive solutions in difficult situations

and everyday challenges.

Responsibility:

To respond when

appropriate and be accountable for

your actions.

Patience:

To wait calmly for

someone or something.

Friendship:

To make and keep a

friend through mutual trust and respect.

Curiosity:

To investigate,

understand and seek the possibilities of

your world.

Cooperation:

To work together

with others to achieve a common goal

or good.
