In the intervening years,
however, all of the medals,
actually made of gold,
silver and bronze, largely
disappeared. Lyon lost his gold
medal, and the story goes, it
was probably melted down
and sold during the Great
Depression to put food on the
table. As for the team medals,
Glen Echo Country Club has
said they’ve only been able to
locate a pair of them.
The 1904 Gold Medal
awarded to Chandler Egan
for the team event was found
along with his Silver Medal,
won in the individual
portion, at the bottom of
a bookcase earlier this
year, in the former home of
Egan’s daughter in Chagrin
Falls, Ohio, near Cleveland.
A Gold Medal belonging to
Robert Hunter, who was not
quite 18 years old at the time
of the 1904 Olympics, and
went on to have a notable
golf career at Yale, as well
as, qualifying for two U.S.
Opens, is also accounted for.
In the 2016 Olympic
Games in Rio de Janeiro, six
medals will be awarded for
golf and only for individual
play. Three each, Gold,
Silver and Bronze, for the
men’s and women’s stroke-
play competitions. Golf
will also be in the 2020
Games in Tokyo, but its
future beyond then will be
decided in 2017 in a vote of
the International Olympic
Committee.
