Christmas
came
early
for 21 area charities last
month. The recipients of the
charitable proceeds from
the Marathon Classic were
invited to a luncheon at the
Inverness Club to receive
their individual checks on
December 16.
The Marathon Classic, first
known as the Jamie Farr
Toledo Classic, was initially
held in 1984 to generate
funds for local children’s
charities. Over the years, the
tournament has continued to
grow and the annual amount
generated for donation has
continued to increase. The
$543,000 distributed from
the 2016 tournament brings
the total funds distributed
to benefit local children’s
charities, over its 30-year
history, to $9.8 million.
The Marathon Classic is now
one of the longest running
tournaments on the LPGA
Tour schedule. Tour players
enjoy their week in Toledo
and the event has had some of
the biggest names in women’s
golf hoist the trophy. World
No. 1, Lydia Ko won the
Marathon Classic two of the
last three years. In an exciting
climax to this past summer’s
event, Ko was forced to win
in a three-woman playoff
over world No. 2, Ariya
Jutanugarn and Mirim Lee.
Jutanugarn went on to win
the Race to the CME Globe
and the $1 million bonus,
plus was named LPGA Tour
Player of the Year, at the end
of the season.
Marathon Petroleum, based
in Findlay, Ohio, is proud to
have been associated with
the LPGA Tour tournament
for the past four years. Tom
Kelly, Senior Vice President of
Marketing for Marathon said,
“Having completed four
years as the title sponsor, we
are very pleased to see the
collective efforts to benefit
so many children’s charities.
The partnership with Owens
Corning and O-I, along
with the support of our
business partners and many
northwest Ohio businesses
is why it is such a privilege
to be involved in this great
tournament.”
The 2017 Marathon Classic
will once again be held at
HighlandMeadows Golf Club
in Sylvania, July 17-23. If you
