wasbuiltaround1867bythe
Ladies'PutingClubofSt.
Andrews.Itwasconsidered
improperatthetimeforladies
to'taketheclubbackpasttheir
shoulders.'Becauseofthis,
theycreatedacoursethat
alowed them to play ful
gameswithoutdoingthat.
Thefirstmini-golfcourses
wereactualyminiatureversionsof
the largerones.They had
greens,fairways,sand traps
etc.Itwasn'tuntilafterthe
greatdepresion,whenthese
minigolfcoursesbecametoo
expensive,thatpeoplebegan
tobuildcourseswithwhatever
obstaclestheycouldfind,such
astires,rainguters,barels
andpipes.
Therestishistory.Thecrazy
obstaclesbecamepartofthe
gameofputputthatweknow
today.
TheTWDGA hasaproud
traditionofpromotingcompetition
among members. Weekly
tournaments areheldevery
Fridayfrom thebeginningof
May until the end of
September atthe diferent
memberclubs.
Championship events are
included throughout the
summer.Amaingoalofthe
group is to maintain high
standardsofsportsmanship.
Whatbeganasfourclubs;
ToledoCountryClub,Inverness,
SylvaniaandToledoGolfClub,
hasgrownto27clubs.The
clubsarelocatedinNorthwestern
OhioandSoutheasternMichigan.
Membership today includes
almost150women.
ThepurposeoftheTWDGA
istopromotecompetitionamong
themembersoftheassociation
to conducttournaments,
championshipevents,andto
establish and maintain high
standardsofsportsmanship.
TheTWDGAprovides
arealadygolfersa
venuetomeetand
competeonsome
ofthefinestgolf
coursesnorthwest
Ohioandsoutheast
Michiganhaveto
ofer.
The Toledo Women’s
District Golf Association
(TWDGA)wilbegin its94th
seasonin2015andhasseta
tentativeschedulefor2015.
Thefirstevent
oftheyearwilbe
held at Fostoria
onMay1.Highland
Meadows,Fremont
Country Club,Toledo
CountryCluband
StoneRidgeGolf
Clubwilhostthe
first five Friday
events.
Sylvania, Plum Brook,
Chippewa,Monroe,Inverness,
Findlay,Lenawee,WestShore,
Hantz,StoneOak,GroseIsle,
Belmont,Heatherdowns,
Valeywood,LostCreek and
Brandywine wil also host
eventsduringthesummer.
