STEP BACK IN TIME WITH THE HICKORY GOLF ASSOCIATION
Have you ever imagined what
it was like to play golf before
hi-tech,
graphite-shafted,
composite-crafted,
big-
headed drivers and trackman?
The Hickory Golf Association
is a group of avid golfers, who
enjoy turning back the clock
to golf as it was played at the
turn of the 20
th
century with
a mashie, niblick and spoon.
The mission of the Hickory
Golf Association is to help
more golfers enjoy the game
using hickory shafted clubs.
To that end the association
sponsors regional, state,
local, and national events.
In2016,18tournamentsareon
the Hickory Golf Association’s
schedule, including events in
Wyandotte, Charlevoix and
Whitehall, Michigan. The
season stretches from April
to November and events are
held in, Washington, Oregon,
Alabama, Illinois, Nebraska,
Iowa,
West
Virginia,
Wisconsin,
Pennsylvania
and
the
season-ending
tournament will be held at
historic Mid-Pines Golf Club
in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
In addition to sponsoring
tournaments, the Hickory
Golf Association helps their
members stay connected
to other golfers involved in
maintaining, repairing and
collecting Hickory Shafted
golf clubs.
The Director of the Hickory
Golf Association, William
Reed told us,
“The Hickory Golf Associ-
ation has been growing ex-
ponentially over the past ten
years. Local and regional as-
sociations are hosting new
events and tournaments each
year, plus there is a growing
interest in playing the game
in its most pristine form.”
Many
Hickory
Golf
Association participants are
also Hickory Club collectors
and a whole industry has
been developed around the
resale, repair and refurbishing
of these historic clubs.
