The LPGATour has a long history inToledo
with the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic which
is now the Marathon Classic. Just north
across the border in Ann Arbor, Michigan
a new LPGA Tour event will be held May
23-29 at Travis Pointe Golf Club.
Held over Memorial Day weekend, the
LPGA Volvik Championship will benefit
local charity, and provide an economic
boost to the Ann Arbor community. It
will be internationally televised on Golf
Channel to over 170 countries.
The tournament will
benefit military vet-
erans, active military,
their spouses and
children. One initia-
tive for the event is to create awareness
for the services offered to military fami-
lies through the National Network of De-
pression Centers (NNDC), born out of the
University of Michigan Comprehensive
Depression Center.
TheNNDC is
a collection
of more than
600 experts
working to conquer mood disorders. It
is leading efforts to advance diagnosis
and treatments for those with bipolar,
depression and related mental illnesses.
They are working to develop connections
among its members to advance scientific
discovery, and to provide care to patients
with depressive and bipolar illnesses.
Built in 1977 by Michigan golf architect,
Bill Newcomb, Travis Pointe will play to a
par-72 at 6,700 yards for the ladies. It has
hosted numerous tournaments, including
the PGA Northern Club Professional
Championship, the Michigan Amateur
Championship, the Women’s Western
Amateur, the Women’s Michigan Open
and numerous US Open and US Senior
Open qualifiers.
The Volvik Championship will also offer
a chance to tee it up with the women
professionals in a Pro-Am on Wednesday,
May 25
th
. Entrants will be invited to meet
the LPGA pros in a reception on Tuesday
