KentStatetookacommanding15-stroke
lead over Eastern Michigan into the
final round of the 2016 Mid-American
Conference (MAC) Championship.
Cool windy conditions made scoring
difficult on the demanding Highland
Meadows course.
KSU increased their four-shot lead after
round two on a strong performance
by sophomore Ian Holt, who fired a
superb one-under-par 70. His three-
round total of 215 left him at two-
over-par for the tournament and in
third place individually. Three other
KSU team members, Chase Johnson, Gisli
Sveinbergsson and Bjarki Petursson were just
two shots behind Holt and tied for sixth at four-
over-par.
On the final day, KSU completed the 20-stroke
win and finished with three players inside the
top-10 in individual scoring. Ian Holt and
Chase Johnson were named First-Team All
MAC. Johnson also earned MAC Player of the
Year honors.
This was the 23
rd
MAC Championship victory
for Kent State and it appears they may continue
to dominate men’s golf in the MAC Conference
in the foreseeable future. Gisli Sveinbergsson
from KSU was named MAC Freshman of the
Year and Head Coach, Herb Page was named
MAC Coach of the Year.
Two local golfers earned individual awards
following the conclusion of the tournament.
Otto Black from the University of Toledo was
named First-Team All MAC and Brett Rinker
from BGSU was named All MAC Second Team.
Akron’s George Baylis fired a 67 in the final
round to finish the tournament at one-under-
par (283) to claim the individual title. The
sophomore was named to the All-Tournament
Team, as well as, the 2016 First Team All-MAC,
plus he receives automatic qualification to the
NCAA Regionals.
With this win, Kent State earns an automatic
berth in the 2016 NCAAMen’s Golf Regionals.
The rest of the field for the NCAA Tournament
will be announced on Thursday, May 5.
