Stroke and Distance Rule
ON the Putting Green
Stroke and Distance is a
penalty term normally used
when your ball is either lost
or goes out of bounds. Upon
either of these events, a ball
must be placed, as near as
possible, to where you last
played. Remember to count
your original stroke and add
a penalty stroke. (see USGA
Rules #27-1)
The term
‘stroke and distance’
refers to the original swing
(stroke) and the length the
ball traveled (distance) only
counted in your score, not
in advancing your golf ball.
Most golfers experience this
when hitting from the tee-box
as their wayward effort goes
out of bounds (OB), never to
be seen again.
