grass, down the hill, and into
a precarious lie? Or the time
you had a ten-foot carry to
the pin but shanked the ball
into the surrounding woods?
Rather than take several
strokes to get back to your
current situation, you could
invoke rule 28, claiming your
ball unplayable, and replay
from that previous lie. Maybe
this time you will have better
results and knock it close to
the pin.
This is similar to the lost tee
shot example, remember to
count the stroke you made
before you deemed the ball
unplayable and add one
penalty stroke. While these
two strokes may seem harsh
the result may be better than
playing the ball as it lies.
If your playing partners state
the lie was good enough to
play from, remind them the
rules state,
‘The player is the sole judge
as to whether his ball is
unplayable’.
Remember, the rules can be
our friends. Mirroring that old
saying,
“the rules giveth and
they taketh away”.
