In truth, my
cousin was not
that excited
about being a
pro f es s i ona l
athlete and cut himself from
the team allowing Charlie
Waters to enjoy a highly
successful NFL career with
the Cowboys.
My cousin was very happy
to return home, to his small
town. He became a teacher,
who eventually took up the
game of golf. Golf was a
sport he never even imagined
playing as a child, but like
football he soon excelled and
became a low handicapper.
We were talking, one day,
and I ask him about golf and
football. I felt his answer had
meaning for everyone,
“When
I played
football,
every time I put on that
helmet, I felt I was learning
something about myself as a
man. When I play golf, every
time I go to play a round, I
learn something about myself
as a person. Golf has given
me so much more in life than
football ever could have”
This is a true story and I bring
it up to illustrate to every
parent that life’s trials may be
offering opportunities. Here
was one of the best football
players in the country that
chose to let another take his
spot and learned a game that
may have brought him more
insight and a meaning in his
life than continuing in football
ever could have provided.
Don’t allow Expectations to
Drown Out Each Child’s Own
Desires and Success.
Golf Skills are Life Skills, they
provide a wonderful learning
ground for every young
person.
Choose wisely my friends,
and put a golf club in their
hands.
