The state of golf is in a curious
place. News of retail golf store
closings, mergers and mega
deals fill the media. Annual
reports indicate that more
people are trying golf, but the
number of overall golfers is
declining, while the PGA and
LPGA Tours play for multi-
million-dollar purses to divide
among the golfing elite.
It has been documented that
people spend between 500-
1,400hoursmoreat theirwork
annually than their parents.
Time for leisure activities, like
golf, suffer. Even though more
people are trying golf for the
first time, many do not return
or stay with it.
Other factors that contribute
to fewer golfers are the cost,
plus it is not the easiest game
to learn to play well.
Golf Digest along with
promotional help from the
USGA and the PGA of America
recently held a campaign “Play
Golf America” to encourage
non-golfers to at least play nine
holes. It is a perfect example
of how the governing bodies
of golf are attempting to bring
more fans to the game.

Parents constantly worry about placing
their children in a safe environment, but what
better place to allow your children to spend
time, than at the golf course.
