rather than the steely-eyed major champion,
he would become.
In 1939, he held an assistant professional
position at the Century Country Club in White
Plains, NewYork.Althoughhewas always polite
to the membership, his shyness prevented him
from being a back-slapping, smiling politician
required of a club professional then and now.
A past president of the Inverness Club, Cloyd
Haas was assigned the task of finding a
suitable Head Professional for Inverness and
his decision came down to Nelson or Hogan.
Hogan simply did not have the favorable press
of Nelson and he certainly did not possess the
down-home humor and personality that a club
like Inverness was seeking at the time.
Haas and Inverness Club chose Nelson. The
rest is history.
