Jack Nicklaus set the bar for
future golfers to aspire to
reach by capturing 18 major
championship trophies. He,
along with wife Barbara,
continue to set a high standard
for future philanthropy, as well.
The Memorial Tournament
has raised millions dollars for
charity over its 40-year history,
plus Nicklaus’ association
with the Honda Classic in
Florida, has raised several
more million to benefit the
southeastern Florida medical
community.
In addition to all of the char-
itable donations generated
for the Children’s Hospital
in Columbus, the Nicklaus’
have pledged $60 million to
fund the construction of an
advanced Pediatric Care Pa-
vilion for the Miami Hospital.
Six years ago Jack and
Barbara Nicklaus attended a
luncheon event in Houston
to raise money for a local
charity and after the meeting,
Barbara asked her husband,
“Why can’t we do this in
Columbus?”
From that simple question
the Nationwide Legends
Luncheon was born. To date
it has raised $4 million for
the Nationwide Children’s
Hospital
in
Columbus,
recognized nationally as
one of the finest providers of
health care for children.
This year alone, the luncheon
raised $1.1 million dollars
for the hospital that caters
to children that face severe
medical issues.
The luncheon features the
annual
Memorial
Golf
Tournament honoree along
with Mr. Nicklaus answering
questions for the assembled
guests. The 2016 honoree,
Johnny Miller, told stories of
his career and highlighted his
U.S. Open win in 1973.
It also gives awards to
deserving children that have
overcome personal medical
issues and strive to lead lives
of service. Kyle Mitchell, a
